Older garages need more than a quick coat of paint. Weathered boards, failing paint, exposed wood, vegetation, moisture, trim details, and years of outdoor exposure all affect how the structure should be approached. Our process focuses on restoring the surface of the wood before painting. We remove loose and failing paint where appropriate, clean and prepare weathered sections, smooth rough areas, prime exposed wood, and bring each board to a better condition before the final coats are applied.

This is where the work becomes more than scraping. As failing paint is removed, the grain, texture, and age of the wood begin to show again. Our approach is to preserve what gives the structure character while preparing the surface carefully for primer and paint.
This part of the preparation is intentionally hands-on and artisanal. Before washing, we go over each board of wood with soft brushes and wire brushes to loosen old residue from the grain, seams, edges, grooves, and weathered areas. After that, the surface is washed and damp wiped so the loosened material can be cleared away before primer and paint are applied. It is a slower, more thoughtful step, but it helps us better understand the condition of the wood and gives the final finish a cleaner, stronger foundation for the paint to adhere to.
The preparation continues across the full face of the garage. Once the loose paint and worn edges are visible, scaffolding gives us better access to work the siding properly instead of rushing from a ladder. Each section is scraped back where the paint has failed, the edges are cleaned up, and the exposed wood is made ready for primer.
Older wood garages do not always need to be stripped completely bare, but they do need honest preparation. We remove what is loose, smooth what needs attention, and leave sound material in place where it still belongs. That balance helps preserve the original siding while giving the new primer and paint a stronger surface to hold onto.
Once the loose paint is removed and the wood is cleaned, the garage begins to come back together. Here, the side wall has been masked and primed before painting. The primer seals the exposed wood, helps even out the surface, and gives the coat a stronger foundation. This is not about making the building look new all at once. It is about bringing order back to the surface: protecting the trim, covering the bare wood, and preparing the siding so the final paint can sit properly.
This step took some careful considerartion; The front of the garage had hard-to-reach areas, exposed siding, old paint edges, trim details, and active site conditions that had to be worked around carefully before priming could continue.
There were also wasps near the bird feeder area, so the work had to be approached with patience, not force. Each section was handled meticulously, one step at a time: setting access, removing loose material where needed, checking the wood, protecting the surrounding areas, and priming the surface ahead of painting,

Any such conditions should be addressed by the homeowner or an appropriate contractor before our surface preparation, priming, and painting work begins. Unresolved conditions may delay the project, limit the areas we are able to work on, or require a revised scope.
