Wallpaper Removal & Painting Around Wallpaper

Many homes in the Hudson Valley still have wallpaper in kitchens, bathrooms, and older rooms. Before repainting, the first step is deciding whether it should be removed, sealed, or worked around. We evaluate wallpaper as part of a painting project rather than treating it as a decorating service. Some wallpaper removes cleanly and the walls can be repaired and painted. Others are bonded tightly and removing them can damage the drywall, making sealing and preparation the better option. In certain cases, trim and surrounding surfaces can be painted without disturbing the wall covering.

When removal is appropriate, existing wallpaper can be stripped and the surface repaired so the new finish lays flat and consistent. After removal, walls are patched, skimmed if needed, sanded, and primed before painting.

The goal is not simply to take wallpaper down — it is to leave the surface stable so the next finish lasts and does not telegraph seams, glue lines, or damage.
